As staff, students and families work through unprecedented times, here are a number of resources that could potentially help answer questions and reduce anxiety.
An update from Jackie about social distancing measures that are being put up around school for safety. Looking forward to having our wonderful students back in when possible
Staff Protocol on Site
Staff arriving at school will be screened with a Thermal Imaging Camera before entering the school buildings
Hands to be washed on entering a building and frequently through the day following PHE guidelines which are displayed near the sinks.
PPE is to be collected from reception if required. Staff working with students with complex needs should follow the PPE guidance in the complex needs provision protocol document.
There is a rota to show which staff are working with which students in which location written on the white board each day. Staff should adhere to this rota. Any request to change should be made to the member of the Senior Leadership Team on site and the rota updated with any changes.
Staff should assemble in the dining room to collect their students at 9am
Students will stay on their bus until 9am. They will be screened with a Thermal Imaging Camera by Anita as they get off the bus and before they enter the school buildings. Students will be directed to the dining room where they will sit at tables in their bus route groups.
Students who travel independently or who are brought to school by parents will be screened for temperature and also assemble in the dining room until collected by staff.
Hand sanitation stations are available at entry points to buildings as a back up to hand washing
Social distancing to be maintained at all times and staff and students should follow the one way system signage. Key stage 3 classroom groups are to follow the signage through the dining room, key Stage 4 classroom groups are to follow the signage through Firs corridor
All staff to be vigilant to eliminate congestion in areas such as reception and dining room
Dinner is at 12.30pm each day, social distancing is to be maintained by using all the tables. Staff and students are only to go to collect their meals when a cross marked on the floor by the serving hatch is free to stand on.
There is a member of staff nominated each day to cover breaks. Breaks are to be taken individually to maintain social distance
Students are to be brought by staff to the dining room 5 minutes before the end of the school day and sit at the table allocated to their bus route. Anita and Lisa will call the students in bus route order to go to their bus.

With disruption in everyone’s lives due to coronavirus (COVID-19) it’s important that we all pay attention to our mental health and wellbeing and the mental health of children and young people.
Research suggests that the pandemic is going to affect everyone’s mental wellbeing, particularly vulnerable groups such as children (Holmes et al, 20201).
Children and young people may be feel worried or anxious about different things. Beyond the virus itself there is the interruption of the normal school routine, suddenly spending most of their time indoors and no longer regularly seeing family and friends.
They may also experience someone close to them, such as a family member, carer, friend or teacher, becoming seriously ill or passing away. This can cause feelings of sadness, loss and grief.
‘My Health Passport’ is a resource for autistic people who might need hospital treatment.
The passport is designed to help autistic people to communicate their needs to doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals. It was developed by Baroness Angela Browning – an National Autistic Society Vice President – in collaboration with The National Autistic Society.
It was independently reviewed in 2017 and updated following comments by autistic people and professionals about how they were using it or wanted to use it.
Kooth is being provided now as a free, safe and anonymous service to support young people’s emotional and mental health in Birmingham. Because young people have suddenly had exams cancelled, transition arrangements thrown up in the air and are dealing with the impact of COVID-19 on their loved ones this is important. The new service was successfully launched yesterday for young people from year 6, aged 11 up to 25. The full offer, including online self-referral can be accessed at www.kooth.com.
Kooth is linked into the wider mental health support from Forward Thinking Birmingham and offers:
Online mental health counselling and chat services from midday to 10pm during the week, and 6pm to 10pm at weekends
Peer to peer support through moderated discussion forums
Self-care tools and resources to build resilience
Early response to and identification of emotional wellbeing and mental health problems
And there are no waiting lists, referrals or thresholds to access the service

Support From Birmingham Educational Psychology Service
Please find attached a flyer for the support line being run by the Birmingham Educational Psychology Service, for all parents and carer’s across the city, offering them telephone consultations with psychologists during the school shut down period. This service is self-referral by parents and is available for any issue they wish to raise around their children and family situation at this time.
